It is perfectly acceptable to cross an ATZ provided you announce your intentions or gain permission (if there is an air traffic control service provided within it) and do not cut across circuit traffic. Ideally, any transit should be done above circuit height. If you are unsure as to whether you can avoid traffic already in the ATZ, fly around instead

Exemple of typical Radio Exchange

  • Who you are and what you want– callsign, aircraft type and request;
  • What you are doing – point of departure and destination, route or area of operation and/or intentions;
  • Where you are– position and altitude/level. Use a reference point such as a major town or aerodrome, that the controller will be able to identity; and
  • What you want– for example a ‘Basic Service’ or a controlled airspace transit.

Aerodrome Operation

  • SafetyCom – callsign ‘Traffic’ : Blind Transmission on 135.475MHz
  • Air/Ground radio – callsign ‘Radio’ : The radio operator has no power to issue clearances or instruct aircraft either in the air or on the ground.
  • Aerodrome flight information service – callsign ‘Information’ : issue mandatory instructions to aircraft and vehicles on the ground, up until aircraft pass a runway holding point. AFIS units do not issue instructions to aircraft in the air
  • Aerodrome control service – callsign ‘Tower’ : Within the ATZ, compliance with their instructions both on the ground and in the air is mandatory
  • Aerodrome approach control service – callsign ‘Approach’ : Approach Control Service may be provided at an aerodrome either inside or outside controlled airspace.

Position reports are to be made as follow

  • Downwind - aircraft are to report ‘Downwind’ when abeam the upwind end of the runway.
  • Base Leg - Aircraft are to report ‘Base Leg’, if requested by ATC, immediately on completion of the turn onto base leg.
  • Final - Aircraft are to report ‘Final’ after the completion of the turn onto final approach and when at a range of not more than 4nm from the approach end of the runway.
  • Long Final - Aircraft flying a final approach of a greater length than 4nm are to report ‘Long Final’ when beyond that range and ‘Final’ when a range of 4nm is reached. Aircraft flying a straight-in approach are to report ‘Long Final’ at 8nm from the approach end of the runway and ‘Final’ when a range of 4nm is reached.

Questions to Mark (we are not used with these procedures)

1) we understand the standard procedure for joining a circuit AD is « overflying » at 2000 FT AGL or less if there are Airspace / Traffic contraints (like Redhill) and to plan an arrival ALT lower as a departure ALT (due to deconflict) - is it correct ?

2) at which moment would you recommend to squwak mandatory transponder code / monitoring FRQ (for exemple en route to Redhill in vicinity of Gatwick, should we squwak 7012 + FREQ 126.825 at VOR SFD or MAY) ?

3) what ATC service would you recommande basic or traffic or depend to situation or weather conditions ?

For your questions (Mark's Answers):

1). Standard circuit join in the UK is generally overhead at 2000ft then descend dead side to circuit height 1000ft AGL and join the circuit cross-wind; but it’s worth checking the website for each airfield as non-standard procedures are the new normal at most airfields now.

  • Joining circuit at Redhill.
  • In the Tonbridge town area to the east of Redhill descend to 1300ft QNH. Gatwick airspace starts at 1500ft above Redhill.
  • Bough Beech Reservoir is a big lake which is normally easy to see from a good distance away - this is at the north-eastern edge of the Gatwick 1500ft airspace.
  • Do get the ATIS at Redhill first (125.305) then call Redhill Tower 119.605 when about 15nm to the east of the airfield. The Bough Beech reservoir is a good point to make the radio call.
  • Report callsign, ATIS info letter and QNH on first call & state you are inbound from the east.
  • They will normally tell you to squawk 3767 with ALT - this will show Gatwick that you are inbound to Redhill.
  • They will tell you to report at one of the VRPs (visual reporting points) depending on the runway in use.
  • From the VRP they will clear you into the circuit - they will specify where to join the circuit exactly - this could be straight in for 26L, downwind for 08R, left base for 18 or right base for 36. Or sometimes, more rarely, overhead at 1400ft & then join downwind (if the circuit is busy).
  • Circuit altitude is 1200ft QNH and all flights at Redhill should use the QNH.
  • Be careful in the circuit as there may be helicopters below you and overhead light aircraft traffic at 1400ft. Not to mention Gatwick airliners departing downwind above 1500ft (normally these will be at about 3000ft) directly overhead Redhill.
  • The Redhill website shows a few noise sensitive areas and circuit maps as PDF files which are worth a look - also airfield diagram etc.

2). At VOR SFD I would contact Farnborough LARS East 123.225 and ask for basic service and stay with them until Tonbridge / Bough Beech reservoir when you change to Redhill Tower 119.605.

3). I normally use basic service and Farnborough LARS can be very busy some days - difficult to find a gap in calls to actually establish contact with them.
I would ask for traffic service if wx is marginal VFR but I usually use a basic service.

Your route to Lands End looks great - the St Michaels Mount to Southeast of Penzance is spectacular - if you talk to Culdrose you should be able to fly around there. Also St Ives town (to N of Lands End) is especially beautiful from the air.  In the middle of the Bristol Channel is Lundy Island, which does have a fairly rough short grass runway / airfield - it’s quite exotic to visit but may be easier to pass nearby if you are close to that area. It’s actually not more spectacular than other rocky cliffs along the coast of Cornwall and Devon counties so probably not really worth changing your route.

Please let me know if I can help with anything else.
Best regards.

Mark

==========================================================

Hello Jean-Luc.

Great to hear from you.
Redhill is a good entry point - the nice cafe “Pilots Hub” closes at 5pm normally and the airfield closes at 7pm local time in summer.
https://www.redhillaerodrome.com/pilot-information/current-state
Approach from the east below 1500ft QNH will make most sense for you. Get ATIS info prior to first radio contact. Redhill has full ATC service - effectively like class D airspace within the Redhill ATZ.
Make radio contact with Redhill at approximately Tunbridge. Beware of the Gatwick airspace at 1500ft & above to the south and west of Tunbridge.
If you want to earn a degree in UK VFR flight - this huge PDF is great (if not a bit too much info):
For routing Redhill - Duxford I would fly over the QE2 Bridge over River Thames at Dartford - below 2500ft. This is where the M25 motorway crosses the river. It’s an interesting industrial / river dock area too. It will steer you clear of the London City class D airspace too. It gives a nice view of the London skyline especially in the morning if wx is clear.
From there you can choose whether to route east or west of the Stansted CTZ as you wish. East is normally a quieter route (less of a bottle-neck).
I must recommend my 2 favourite aerial views for flying on the south coast are Beachy Head, (better than the white cliffs of Dover) and “The Needles” Isle of Wight (western tip of the island). Both spectacular chalk geological features. Best view of both is from approx 500ft over the sea.
I live in Wimbledon - about 45 mins drive away from Redhill in London - so not very local - but I instruct at Redhill Aviation Flight Centre.
I can ask some others about local accommodation for you if you like ? Also I will try to be around to say hi & help on your arrival if I can.
Do let me know if you need any more info. ?
Best wishes.

Hi Mark,
I’m Jean-Luc Robert, pilot of the Group Vol à Moteur in Neuchâtel Airfield and I hope you had a good flight on 19th. You can find more informations on our website www.gvmn.ch or contact our head of training hagmann.patrick@bluewin.ch

As we talked on Saturday, our group plan a trip to UK this year with 2-3 planes (6-8 pilots) - THU 30.05 to SUN 02.06 - we are planning the routing and I see that Redhill is a good Entry Point in UK, we can clear the custom with GAR Forms, so we will let you know about our Itinerary.

Can your recommend us some advice and VFR literature to structure our preparation to fly in UK ?
We intend to fly to Cambridge / Duxford, what Routing do you recommend us through / around CTR London, I read that with single engine aircraft it is almost impossible due to the Rule of Air - restriction to overfly congested area in case of an engine failure.

Thank you for your cooperation
