- Rules
- Low flying and congested areas (do not fly over 500 FT to any person, vessels, vehicle or structure)
- In the event of an engine failure, single engine aircraft should be able to glide clear of any congested areas. You should not rely on being able to land in parks or other open spaces within congested areas, since there may be people on them
- When two aircraft are approaching an aerodrome for landing, the one at a lower heights shall have priority. This rule should not be used to cut in front of another aircraft that is already established onAirspace
- VFR
- Class CDEG : ERA minima (visi 5 km / cloud 1500 m horizontal / 1000 FT vertical)
- Class G : below 3000 FT (clear of cloud / visi 5 km / in sight of surface)
- Do not enter / TKO / LDG within CTR / ATZ when cloud ceiling less than 1500 FT AGL or visibility less than 5 km
- In UK, there is no requirement for VFR flights to fly at VFR Cruise level
- SVFR
- Clear of cloud and sight of surface, min. cloud ceiling 600 FT
- when assessing a SFVR clearance for an AD without meteorological report, take in account the conditions reported to a parent airport
- Classification
- Controlled C & D : VFR with clearance and basic or traffic service
- Controlled Class E : only in Scotland (without VFR clearance)
- Uncontrolled G : VFR with basic or traffic service
- ATZ / MATZ
- Watch OPS hours & Listening ATIS to know ATSU / FISO in activity
- Sometimes you may wish to cross an ATZ during enroute flight (for example the cloud base may prevent flight above the vertical limit of the ATZ). It is perfectly acceptable to cross an ATZ provided you announce your intentions or gain permission (if there is an air traffic control service provided within it) and do not cut across circuit traffic. Ideally, any transit should be done above circuit height. If you are unsure as to whether you can avoid traffic already in the ATZ, fly around instead
- To cross a MATZ you should contact the assigned frequency prior to entry and request a “MATZ penetration service” with your proposed route. If there is no response from the assigned frequency after two attempts you may enter with caution
- Zone / Area
- Transponder mandatory zone
- Radio mandatory zone
- Prohibited area (No VFR)
- Restricted area (VFR restriction)
- You should never overfly a glider site below the specified winch launch altitude. You may encounter a vertical winch cable
- AIAA (intense activity)
- Sector with Instrument approche (avoid to cross at the IAP's Altitude)
- Military low flying system (VFR recommend to fly over 1000 FT AGL)
- Controlled airspace
- The key message on controlled airspace is that if it appears advantageous and sensible to do so, confidently request a transit. If not, plan a route that minimises the risk of infringement.
- Transponder use
- Squwak 7000 VFR
- Altimeter Setting
- Regional pressure setting (ENR 6 of the AIP)

- Aerodrome operation
- Safety com 135.475 for AD without assigned FREQ
- Standard ist Left Hand circuit with blind call
- Plan to arrival : identified runway in user, determine circuit direction and how to join, confirmed the circuit altitude and QNH
- Joining procedure recommended is "overhead", caution of Airspace / Traffic contraints or use the "joining circuit at crosswind leg"
- At an aerodrome with a FISO unit you must request taxi instructions before taxiing. FISO to Holding point Runway (Hot Spot) at which the service reverse to information only (no clearance)

Exemple of typical Radio Exchange
- Who you are and what you want– callsign, aircraft type and request;
- What you are doing – point of departure and destination, route or area of operation and/or intentions;
- Where you are– position and altitude/level. Use a reference point such as a major town or aerodrome, that the controller will be able to identity; and
- What you want– for example a ‘Basic Service’ or a controlled airspace transit.
Aerodrome Operation
- SafetyCom – callsign ‘Traffic’ : Blind Transmission on 135.475MHz
- Air/Ground radio – callsign ‘Radio’ : The radio operator has no power to issue clearances or instruct aircraft either in the air or on the ground.
- Aerodrome flight information service – callsign ‘Information’ : issue mandatory instructions to aircraft and vehicles on the ground, up until aircraft pass a runway holding point. AFIS units do not issue instructions to aircraft in the air
- Aerodrome control service – callsign ‘Tower’ : Within the ATZ, compliance with their instructions both on the ground and in the air is mandatory
- Aerodrome approach control service – callsign ‘Approach’ : Approach Control Service may be provided at an aerodrome either inside or outside controlled airspace.
Position reports are to be made as follow
- Downwind - aircraft are to report ‘Downwind’ when abeam the upwind end of the runway.
- Base Leg - Aircraft are to report ‘Base Leg’, if requested by ATC, immediately on completion of the turn onto base leg.
- Final - Aircraft are to report ‘Final’ after the completion of the turn onto final approach and when at a range of not more than 4nm from the approach end of the runway.
- Long Final - Aircraft flying a final approach of a greater length than 4nm are to report ‘Long Final’ when beyond that range and ‘Final’ when a range of 4nm is reached. Aircraft flying a straight-in approach are to report ‘Long Final’ at 8nm from the approach end of the runway and ‘Final’ when a range of 4nm is reached.

- Joining circuit at Redhill.
- In the Tonbridge town area to the east of Redhill descend to 1300ft QNH. Gatwick airspace starts at 1500ft above Redhill.
- Bough Beech Reservoir is a big lake which is normally easy to see from a good distance away - this is at the north-eastern edge of the Gatwick 1500ft airspace.
- Do get the ATIS at Redhill first (125.305) then call Redhill Tower 119.605 when about 15nm to the east of the airfield. The Bough Beech reservoir is a good point to make the radio call.
- Report callsign, ATIS info letter and QNH on first call & state you are inbound from the east.
- They will normally tell you to squawk 3767 with ALT - this will show Gatwick that you are inbound to Redhill.
- They will tell you to report at one of the VRPs (visual reporting points) depending on the runway in use.
- From the VRP they will clear you into the circuit - they will specify where to join the circuit exactly - this could be straight in for 26L, downwind for 08R, left base for 18 or right base for 36. Or sometimes, more rarely, overhead at 1400ft & then join downwind (if the circuit is busy).
- Circuit altitude is 1200ft QNH and all flights at Redhill should use the QNH.
- Be careful in the circuit as there may be helicopters below you and overhead light aircraft traffic at 1400ft. Not to mention Gatwick airliners departing downwind above 1500ft (normally these will be at about 3000ft) directly overhead Redhill.
- The Redhill website shows a few noise sensitive areas and circuit maps as PDF files which are worth a look - also airfield diagram etc.

Hello Jean-Luc.
Approach from the east below 1500ft QNH will make most sense for you. Get ATIS info prior to first radio contact. Redhill has full ATC service - effectively like class D airspace within the Redhill ATZ.

Hi Mark,I’m Jean-Luc Robert, pilot of the Group Vol à Moteur in Neuchâtel Airfield and I hope you had a good flight on 19th. You can find more informations on our website www.gvmn.ch or contact our head of training hagmann.patrick@bluewin.chAs we talked on Saturday, our group plan a trip to UK this year with 2-3 planes (6-8 pilots) - THU 30.05 to SUN 02.06 - we are planning the routing and I see that Redhill is a good Entry Point in UK, we can clear the custom with GAR Forms, so we will let you know about our Itinerary. Can your recommend us some advice and VFR literature to structure our preparation to fly in UK ?We intend to fly to Cambridge / Duxford, what Routing do you recommend us through / around CTR London, I read that with single engine aircraft it is almost impossible due to the Rule of Air - restriction to overfly congested area in case of an engine failure.Thank you for your cooperationSincerlyJean-Luc Robert
